Medical Marijuana in Colorado

Defend Your Rights – Hire an Experienced Denver Drug Crime Attorney

Since the approval of Amendment 20 in 2000, medical marijuana has been available to eligible patients in Colorado. Individuals who obtain doctor's approval for using the drug can carry up to two ounces for personal use and grow as many as six plants with no more than three being mature at one time.

In order to obtain a medical marijuana card, potential users must first speak with a doctor and show proof of an existing "debilitating condition" such as cancer, chronic pain, nausea, HIV / AIDS, or epilepsy. After approval from a doctor, the patient will need to register with the Colorado medical marijuana registry – a confidential database that provides information about patients and their conditions.

Understanding Colorado's Recreational Marijuana Laws

While the state of Colorado has approved recreational use of marijuana for individuals over the age of 21, recreational users are only allowed to have up to 1 ounce of the substance. Patients who carry a medical card and are registered in the medical marijuana database can carry up to two ounces without penalty.

Similar to the recreational laws, medical users must still abide by local municipality laws and not smoke in public or receive their prescription through an illegal source. Patients must also only use the marijuana for personal use and never sell or distribute the drug.
